Using over 11,000 photographs, maps, memorabilia, prints, postcards and more from the collections of Wakefield Libraries and partners, the Twixt Aire and Calder online archive of images brings to life the diversity of life in Wakefield and District both past and present. Since its launch in 2003 with a mere 9,000 images, the archive has grown into a popular place to journey into our local history for use by all ages and abilities.
A digital war memorial with stories of people from the Wakefield district who served their country in the great 20th century conflicts. Researched and written by local people and family historians whose relatives lived locally, this archive highlights the significant effect that war has had on our local communities. Using service records and treasured family memorabilia, stories of individual men and women are brought to life through words, photographs, postcards and original documents. Since 2007 the archive has collected hundreds of stories of bravery, tragedy and the communities and families left reeling from the consequences of war, forming a unique memorial for our district.
