River Aire, Castleford

A colour slide showing foam on the River Aire at Castleford. The foam was caused by detergents deposited in the river by textile mills, activated by the weir. Also in the photograph is Hartley's Bridge, built by Jesse Hartley in 1808, which replaced a seven arched wooden construct. On the right hand side of the bridge is Ship Inn, with Hartley's warehouse on the left of the picture. All Saints Parish Church and Allinsons flour mill can also be seen.
