Working on headgear at Sharlston Colliery, 1982

A black and white photograph showing two shaftsmen working on the shafts at Sharlston Colliery in 1982. The work was part of a £10 million scheme to boost production to a million tonnes of coal a year. The investment programme was to install new headgear to deal with the larger coal skips, and build an underground bunker to store 1000 tonnes of coal. The pit was expected to have a life of 25 years after the improvement. It closed in the 1990s. Internal Reference: WR
