Albert Carr

War Service

Albert Carr served with the 2nd Battalion of the Coldstream Guards and died on 1st September 1943 age 20. He was buried at Bone War Cemetery, Annaba, Algeria – grave VIII. C.14.

“DIED OF WOUNDS
News has been received by his parents, Mr and Mrs Albert Carr of 51 Pinders Garth, Ferrybridge, that their eldest son Guardsman Albert Carr, died of accidental wounds in North Africa on Sept., 1st. Guardsman Carr enlisted in June 1941 in the West Yorkshire Regt, and in December 1942 transferred to the Coldstream Guards. He was 19 years of age. His parents have received a letter from the Major of his Company who writes “He was such a good boy, and a good soldier, and we as well as you will miss him very much. He was killed by the explosion of a grenade, which for some unaccountable reason went off, and your boy was hit on the head, and did not regain consciousness.” The letter adds that he was buried at Philipville, and that his friend, who was killed at the same time, lies next to him. Mr and Mrs Carr attended a service of remembrance at the Guards Chapel, Birdcage Walk, London. On his 19th birthday Guardsman Carr walked with the West Yorkshire Regt team in the Bradford Walk of 15 ½ miles and secured a silver cup. Before he joined up, he worked at Messrs Jackson Bros.”

Family Life

Albert Carr was born in the third quarter of 1923. His birth was registered at Stoke on Trent and he was the son of Albert Carr and Martha Carr née Bailey. They had married in the third quarter of 1919 and their marriage was registered at Stoke on Trent.
