Alexander joined the Royal Garrison Artillery as Gunner 94873 with the 198th Battery and went to France on 25th November 1916 until his death on 29th May 1917. He was buried in the Henin Communal Cemetery in the Pas de Calais, France and awarded the British War and Victory Medals.
Family Life
Alexander was born on 2nd July 1881 to William and Ann Hacking and was baptised at Christ Church Sowerby Bridge on 18th September 1881.
By the 1891 census the family were living at Glen View, Hebden Bridge. William was a corn miller and was recorded as having been born in Manchester, whilst Ann was from Halifax. Alexander had an older sister Marion, who had been born on 6th July 1878, also living with them. By the following census in 1901 the family had moved to 37, Melbourne Street, Hebden Bridge. William was a Corn Warehouseman and Alexander was a fustian labourer and Marion a fustian machinist – fustian being a thick hard-wearing cloth.
On 8th October 1912 Alexander married Laura Heptonstall at Hebden Bridge. At his attestation in February 1916 Alexander was living at Melbourne Lodge, Carr Gate and his occupation was recorded as porter at the sanatorium. In 1913 the County Council had leased the Cardigan Hospital at Carr Gate as a tuberculosis sanatorium and I presume that was the sanatorium in question. His record also said he was 5 ft 8 inches tall and 34 years and 10 months old.
