Arthur Barber left Pontefract whilst still a youth and worked in clothing firms. His last appointment was in Sunderland. Happening to be in London he decided to enlist there and thus came to join the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment. He went to France just over a year before he died but was wounded in October 1916. This caused his return to England where he remained in Newcastle for 3 months. In March 1917 he returned to France. He died at a clearing station on the Western Front of wounds sustained in action. He was 25 years old. He had two brothers, John and Wilfred and a sister Ethel.
He is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.
