War Service
Arthur enlisted at Dewsbury and served as Private 41812 in the East Yorkshire Regiment 7th Battalion. Having made some gain in ground during the previous days the order for the battalion on the 28th August 1918 was to hold and consolidate all gains. The battalion was relieved and marched down to the valley NE of Martinpuich. During this march the enemy was shelling the roads and tracks and casualties were sustained. It was most likely that Arthur was killed during this time. He died according to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission on 28th August 1918.
Arthur was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. His effects went to his father Herbert and he was buried in the Warlencourt British Cemetery in France.
Family Life
Arthur was born in Kirkhamgate on 1st September 1899 and baptised at Wrenthorpe St Anne’s on 2nd November of that year. His parents were Herbert, a labourer and Mary Ann.
In 1901 the census recorded the family as living at 10, Milner Court, Flanshaw, Herbert was a general labourer and Mary Ann was a woollen weaver. Their family consisted of Eva aged 13, Ann 10, Lot 8, Harry 5 and Arthur aged 1.
The 1911 census shows the family living at 59 Hungerhill, Morley. Herbert was working in the coke ovens while Lot and Harry were working in the mill. Arthur was still at school, as were the youngest children Elsie (b 1902), Gladys (b 1905) and Marion (b 1908).
