Private Asa Shaw joined the 6th Battalion, King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and died of his wounds on Thursday 6th July 1916 aged 22. He is buried at the Avesnes-le-Comte Communal Cemetery Extension.
From the Wakefield Express 22.7.1916:
“NEW CROFTON SOLDIER KILLED
A MAN WHO PRAISED THE STRETCHER BEARERS
Mrs Shaw of Seventh Avenue Crofton has received official intimation of the death of her son Private Asa Shaw, Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, who died of wounds in hospital in France on 6th July. Deceased who was 22 years of age worked at Nostell Colliery before joining the colours. He had been at the front over twelve months and had taken part in several engagements. Recently when home on furlough he stated that he had had many narrow escapes. “There are so many a British Tommy”, he remarked “who deserve the V.C. but there are not always officers there to observe the brave deeds done. I have seen men go out between the lines under heavy fire to fetch in wounded men and if any men deserve the V.C. or D.C.M. they are the stretcher bearers.”
