War Service
David Lyell became an officer in the 27th Battalion Royal Scots Lothian Regiment. He was killed in action on 12th July 1915 at the Gallipoli Peninsula at the age of 27. There is a tablet above the pulpit in Crofton Church dedicated to him. In Peter Scholefield’s book “The bells of Crofton” it says “January 8th 1916 a muffled peal on Sunday was rung by Ackworth in memory of Lt Lyell and those soldiers who gave their lives in the war”. David had the 3 bells re-hung and added 3 new ones in memory of his Aunt and Uncle who died on 25th February 1915. When the bells were dedicated on 1st January 1916 David was already dead too.
He is remembered at the Helles Memorial.
Family Life
David Lyell was born in 1888. He was educated at Edinburgh University where his photograph appears in their Roll of Honour. He was a Student of Law 1911 – 1914 and was awarded a B.A. (Oxon) degree.
