“THIS SMALL WORLD
In 1943 two Knottingley cousins Sapper Adino Tunningley and L/Cpl David Tucker of the Irish Guards met in hospital in North Africa. Later their paths divided: Tucker went to Italy, where he was captured and Tunningley to North West war theatre. He dropped at Arnhem last September and was taken prisoner and at Stalag IV again met his cousin. Writing to his mother, who lives at Racca Green, Sapper Tunningley says “we see lots of each other and it is good to be with him” and a letter from Tucker says “I am hoping he will be able to stay with me, but we don’t know yet.” Tucker’s home is at Primrose Hill and he has not yet seen his son, who was born after he went abroad in 1943. Before they joined up Tucker worked for Messrs Brown and Lodge, builders of Pontefract and Tunningley was at Bagley’s Glassworks.”
