Ephraim Snow

War Service

Ephraim Snow joined the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry volunteering in 1914. He proceeded overseas in April 1915. Whilst on the Western Front he experienced very heavy fighting, but fell in action near Ypres on September 2nd 1915. Ephraim is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres. He was entitled to the 1914-15 Star and the General Service and Victory medals. His place of residence, before he joined up, was 12, Elgin Street, Hunslet, Leeds.
His death was reported in the Wakefield Express 25.9.1917:
“CROFTON SOLDIER KILLED
LOST OUR BEST WORKER AND FIGHTER
News has been received that Private Ephraim Snow 6th Battalion King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, who lived at 5, Second Street, New Crofton, was killed in France on the 22nd Inst.
The widow has received a letter from Sergeant Hamstead expressing his sympathy and that of his comrades. He states that Snow’s death was practically instantaneous and that he suffered no pain.
The Sergeant adds:- He was the most reliable man in my platoon, he was best natured and very sociable and I could trust him to do anything. I am very upset. He was called away with two more and not one suffered. The other men were Private Hasle and Harrison. It occurred in the last minute of their duty and they were just relieved. I have been up to the trench again and a nice cross has been placed on the spot where he is buried. All in the Company say we have lost our best worker and fighter.”
