Frank Hatfield is on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as Frank Hadfield. He joined the 2nd Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment and died on 18th October 1914. He is remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium, Panel B.
Most of those commemorated by the memorial did not die in major offensives, such as those which took place around Ypres to the north, or Loos to the south. Most were killed during the day-to-day trench warfare which characterised this part of the line, or in small scale set engagements, usually carried out in support of the major attacks taking place elsewhere.

Frank Hatfield was born in 1894 at Sheffield, the son of John Joseph Hatfield and Mary Emma Hatfield nee Waterfall. They married in the first quarter of 1882 and their marriage was registered at Sheffield. In the 1911 census Frank is described as a Clerk to Edge Tools Cutlery Works, living at 242, School Road, Crookes, Sheffield with his parents.
