George William was around 19 or 20 years old when he joined up in 1917 or 18. He was a gunner in the 106th Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery. His service number was 207579.
George died on 14th September 1918 and is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
He was awarded the British and Victory medals.
Family Life
George William was my uncle on my Dad’s side of the family. My father, Charles Wilfred Hardy was married to Alice May Searle Brierley. My father’s brothers were Eric, George William and Ernest. His parents were George and Gertrude Hardy. In 1901 George and Gertrude were living in Victoria Street, Hemsworth with their sons George, aged 3 and Charles, aged 1.
Before joining the army, George was possibly a miner by trade. He died in 1918. I remember that he had a lovely personality. His girlfriend continued to visit his mum and dad regularly for years after the war at their house in Barnsley Rd, South Kirkby.
