War Service

George Wood served with 77 Squadron Bomber Command at RAF Elvington, near York. He was listed as missing in action on 22nd June 1943.
He was one of a crew of 7 on Halifax Bomber W1157 that took off from Elvington shortly before midnight on 21st June 1943 on a mission to bomb Krefeld. Visibility was good with the intended raid to be carried out before the moon period was over. 705 aircraft took part in this raid and 44 were lost to night fighters and ground fire. His aircraft was reported lost without trace, presumed to have been hit by flak and all the crew listed as missing in action. He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial panel 158.

Family Life

George Wood was born on 27th March 1918 and was baptised on 21st April 1918 at Christ Church, Knottingley. He was the son of John Richard Wood and Blanche (nee Tunningley) who had married on 22nd March 1913 at the same church. His father John Richard served with the Cameronian Scottish Rifles and was killed on 23rd March 1918 in World War One, so he never saw his son George. There were two other sons, Richard born 1913 and Joe born 1915.
On 1st March 1924 Blanche Wood married John Walton Bains and they had one daughter Audrey.
