Private John Bradley service number 42545 was born at Grossmoor, Derbyshire. He enlisted at Pontefract and was killed in action while serving with the 9th Battalion Norfolk Regiment in France / Flanders. He died aged 31. He was previously reported missing.
There is a photograph of him in the Wakefield Express. An extract from the “Roll of Honour” in the Wakefield Express for 4th October 1919 says “In loving memory of a dear husband, son and brother Private John Bradley who was killed in France 8.10.1918 from his loving wife and children, Mother, Father, sisters and brothers”.
He is buried in the Montbrehain British Cemetery.
Family Life
An entry in the Parish registers could be the same John. It refers to a marriage between John Bradley and Mary Catherine Leverton of Crofton, at Crofton Church on 12th April 1909. He was 21, she was 25. Both were of 6, Crown View. John was listed as a miner. His father, also John, was a miner. Mary’s father, then deceased, was a joiner. Their witnesses were George Treece and Alice Bradley.
