Private John Dwyer is not shown on the Cock & Crown Memorial (Crofton) and his surname is mis-spelt on the Memorial in the Church as “Dewyre”. It was possible to trace him because his family were subsequently well known in the Crofton community. He brother Andrew became a County Councillor. The Census of 1901 showed the family as living in North’s Yard, Crofton. His parents were James and Margaret. They had one daughter and 3 sons.
John served as Private 3984, with 1st/5th Battalion, KOYLI. He enlisted at South Kirkby and was killed in action in France / Flanders on 4th July 1916.
He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.
