Casualty lists for the York & Lancaster Regiment show 3/4569 Private John William Towler, 2nd Battalion, was born at Adwalton, Leeds and enlisted at Wakefield. He was killed in action in France/Flanders on 16th November 1915.
The Wakefield Express on 18th December 1915 reports under the heading “New Crofton soldier killed”:
“Mrs Towler of Fourth Street, New Crofton has received official intimation of the death of her husband Private Towler, 2nd York & Lancaster Regiment who was killed in action by a shell on 16th November. Private Towler enlisted on October 14th last year. He leaves a widow and three children.”
Private Towler is buried at La Brique Military Cemetery No 2.
