“IN AT THE KILL
Mr and Mrs A Shaw of 25, West View, Knottingley, have received word that their son Stoker Joseph David Shaw, of the Royal Navy, was serving aboard HMS Sheffield when it took part in the sinking of the Scharnorst. Twenty two years of age, Stoker Shaw was in the Reconnaissance Corps some three years before transferring to the Navy about 12 months ago. He was formerly employed by Messrs Bagley & Co. glass bottle manufacturers of Knottingley. He has two brothers in the Forces – Fusilier S Shaw now in North Africa and Signaller G Shaw.”
(My note: Guy Steele on Ferrybridge Memorial was killed 8 June 1940 in an attack by the Scharnorst).
