War Service
Joseph Hodgson served with 57 Squadron, which was based at Scampton. He died on 1st May 1943 age 22, and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey, Panel 153.
He was one of seven people in the aircraft Lancaster ED706, which was piloted by Sgt William John Glotham. It was hit by German defence guns (flak) whilst en route to bomb the town of Essen in early hours of 1 May 1943, this was part of the Battle of the Ruhr, and it was registered as missing in action. [crash location Almere Zuidelijk Flevoland.]
In 1978 The Royal Netherlands Air Force recovered human remains of two members of the crew, but it was not possible to make a positive identification. They were buried at Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, Plot 22, Row F, Graves 8 & 9.
Family Life
Joseph Hodgson was born on 11th April 1921 and was baptised on 1st May 1921 at Christ Church, Knottingley. He was the son of Joseph Hodgson and Polly (nee Miller) who had married on 12th November 1910 at the same church.
