War Service
Lionel King was serving in the 2nd Battalion Prince of Wales Own (West Yorks Regiment) when he died on 23rd April 1944 age 34, a prisoner of war in Burma Camp. He is commemorated on Rangoon memorial. And his name is also recorded on the Ferrybridge War Memorial.
The Rangoon Memorial bears the names of almost 27,000 men of the Commonwealth land forces who died during the campaigns in Burma (now Myanmar) and who have no known grave. The memorial stands in Taukkyan War Cemetery, which is the largest of the three war cemeteries in Burma.

“TEN MONTHS MISSING
News is still wanting of Private Lionel King (35), of the West Yorks Regiment, who was reported missing in Burma as from April 23rd last year. His wife Mrs A King, of Broughton’s Yard, Fishergate, Ferrybridge, received word after that date that he had been wounded, and could not be evacuated; but since then she has had no information of any kind.”
Family Life
Lionel King was born in the first quarter of 1907 and his birth was registered at Dewsbury. He was the son of Thomas William King, a miner and Lizzie (nee Butterfield). They had married on 2nd February 1907 at St Peter’s Church, Earlsheaton.
In the fourth quarter, registered at Pontefract, Lionel King married Alice Tucker.
