Oliver Bednall

War Service

“The many friends of Oliver Bednall, of the Grenadier Guards, will be sorry to learn of his death in action, which took place on July 31st. The deceased was the second son of Mrs Bednall of 9, Stanley Street, Featherstone. From boyhood he had been a most trustworthy shop assistant at Gallon’s Ltd and his pleasing and obliging demeanour, and his kindness generally, won him many friends. By many he was more than respected, he was beloved. He was but 19, yet his character was so formed that he was an example to many. Closely and most usefully associated with the United Methodist Church and Sunday School, he was much missed when called up, and will be still more missed “when the boys come home.” Nevertheless his good influence will survive. The deceased had been in France only four months when he fell, nobly doing his duty. On Sunday last a memorial sermon was preached in the chapel by Mr Hobbs, who voiced the sympathy of the friends of the cause with the bereaved mother and family, and we sure that these have also the sympathy of the public at large in the loss of so estimable a son and brother.”
