War Service
Robert was on board H M S Britannia, the last Royal Navy ship sunk in World War One, off Cape Trafalgar by a German U-Boat in November 1918. He survived the sinking.
Family Life
Robert was born in Castleford in 1897, the son of Harry (Hewer) and Sarah Ann nee Issatt. He married Emily Sharpe.
After the War he worked at Allerton Bywater Colliery but was killed in a roof fall in 1925. His elder brother George (Hewer) was always sure he had been sent to a dangerous area and regretted not being on the same shift, as he felt that he could have prevented the accident.
