In January 1999 it was confirmed that Private Robert L Allen was the brother of John Allen. Robert’s photograph appears on the cover of the Wakefield Express of 27th September 1919. The casualty lists for the KOYLI show him as “2/4th Battalion KOYLI Robert, born and enlisted at Wakefield 30901 Pte Killed in action in France & Flanders 20.07.18.”
The Wakefield Express includes him in their “Roll of Honour” as follows:
“In loving memory of our dear son and brother Pte Robert L Allen 2/4th KOYLI who was reported missing July 20th 1918 now presumed killed, aged 21 years.
On Britain’s Roll of Honour
Where the names of the brave appear
We read the name of the lad we loved
The lad who knew no fear
From his Father, Mother, sister and brother of Schoolhouse Farm, Old Sharlston.”
He is remembered with honour at Bouilly Cross Roads Military Cemetery.
