Stanley Brown was serving with the 1st Battalion South Lancashire Regiment when he died on 12th August 1944 aged 21. He is commemorated at St Charles de Percy War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
The Allied offensive in north-western Europe began with the Normandy landings of 6th June 1944. St Charles de Percy war Cemetery is the southernmost of the Normandy cemeteries. The majority of those buried here died in late July and early August 1944 in the major thrust made from Caumont l’Evente towards Vire to drive a wedge between the German 7th Army and Panzer Group West.

“LOST IN NORMANDY
News has been received from the War Office that Pte Stanley Brown of the South Lancashire Regiment has been killed in action in Normandy. Pte Brown who landed with the 2nd Army on D Day was 21 years old and had been in Forces for three years. His brother Cpl Harold Brown, of the RAMC., who, as already reported in “The Express,” escaped from a prison camp in Italy has now arrived home.”

“PRISONER OF WAR
Mr & Mrs John Brown of Westfield Road, Knottingley, whose son Corporal Harold was officially reported wounded and missing after the fall of Tobruk, have now received a postcard from him to say he is a prisoner of war in Italian hands. Cpl Brown who is 27 was a Private in the RAMC when war broke out and was already in the Middle East. It is 4 -½ years since he was at home.”

“ESCAPED
Corporal Harold Brown, the son of Mr & Mrs John Brown of 5 Westfield Road, Knottingley, was wounded and taken prisoner when Tobruk fell, and sent to Italy. His parents have now received word that he escaped the prison camp and is in the South of Italy. He is expected home in the next convoy to arrive in England.”

Stanley Brown was born in the third quarter of 1923 and his birth was registered at Leeds. He was the son of John Brown and Elizabeth? Johnson who had married in the fourth quarter of 1905 and their marriage was registered at Leeds. Harold, his brother, was born in the third quarter of 1924 and this again was registered at Leeds.
