William Simpson would have been extremely difficult to identify but for the family’s mention of his service number in the reports of his death in the Wakefield Express on 3rd May 1919. The report reads that Pte B (Bill) Simpson, North Staffordshire Regiment of New Crofton, previously reported missing, is now killed. There is a photograph of Bill. Also in that edition of the paper under “Roll of Honour” it says:
“In loving memory of Private William Simpson, North Staff Regt, aged 19. The beloved son of Richard and Anne Simpson of New Crofton, who was reported missing on 21st March 1918, is now reported killed on that date.
“Sharp and sudden was the call
Of one so dearly loved by us all
The blow was great, the shock severe
We little thought his end so near.
In prime of years he was cut down
No longer could he stay,
Because it was our Saviour’s wish
T0 call him hence away.”
Rest in Peace from Mother, Father, family and pals.”
He is remembered with honour at the Pozieres Memorial.
